Javert’s a stressed workaholic, who doesn’t know how to stay away from the office. Having always been a stickler for to the rules, and, for a lack of a better word, kiss up, during uni, he’s left like a fish out of water when his boss sends him on vacation for the sake of his health.
Javert suddenly finds that he can’t escape old college rival, Valjean, who’s had enough of his corporate career, and seems to have chosen the exact same vacation spot as him. After having stumbled upon each other in restaurants more than once, Valjean invites Javert to dinner. The two have scarcely changed from the young men they were during college, Valjean always teasing and instigating. When Javert actually laughs at a joke, Valjean remarks, “You know, you’re much more amiable when you’re not such a hardass.” And when that only causes Javert to chuckle again and shove lightly at Valjean’s shoulder, Valjean writes down his number on a sauce stained napkin and makes Javert promise to keep in touch.
It’s not long before Javert makes good on that promise and the two meet in a different restaurant, this time less of a surprise.
As the days go by, Javert forgets about marking the days on the calendar until his vacation is over and he forgets to check his e-mail and he forgets to call his assistant asking how the office is doing.
And when the month and a half of his vacation is over, Javert realizes that maybe he loves more than just his job.

It’s 1996, and Jean Valjean is released on parole by the strict prison warden Javert. He is unable to find work and wanders from town to town, eventually finding sanctuary with a local priest. He is arrested after stealing from the church that took him in, but the priest records a testimony saying the stolen goods were a gift. Valjean in turn promises to begin a new honest life, breaking parole in the process.

Saturday mornings have become Valjean’s favorite thing. Javert is an early riser, he likes to watch the empty Paris streets and alleys from their apartment; delivery people and postmen are the only ones up doing what they’re paid to do. Sometimes he does last night’s dishes, the soft clinking of plates and wine glasses filling the small apartment, too soft to wake Valjean. Sometimes he goes to the bakery across the street and picks up some newly made croissants and bread, the smell of it filling the entire block in the summers when the baker opens the windows. Most Saturday mornings Valjean wakes up to the smell of coffee and the sound of Javert’s naked feet against the wooden floor.

marius’ girlfriend’s father fought in the korean war. a lot of people’s fathers fought in the korean war, but this was cosette’s father. she would reiterate stories he had told her in the vw bus when the boys dared to allow her in, stories of horror and stories of despair—but, most of all, stories of javert. valjean had served under major javert, a hard-nosed beast of a man whose morals where black and white and whose uniform was immaculate, even whilst under fire in the lush paradise of south korea. he was harsh in his judgement but he was by no means a brutal man; he made cruel decisions but they were by no means bad—he was an enigma and whilst valjean despised the war and the conflict, he admired his commanding officer.

«Javert was a commander in charge of Valjean’s battalion; a motley crew full of scorned lawbreakers whose only chance to regain honor in Rome was to serve Emperor Marcus Aurelius in battle. Following a governmental coup and the death of the Emperor at the hands of his son, Commodus, Javert is left abandoned and in disgrace. Valjean disappears into the ether during the turmoil, only to reappear years later as a well-to-do nobleman of the higher classes. He attends occasional arena tournaments and is shocked to see his former commander brought so low. During a deathmatch, he impulsively risks his name and exposure to save Javert from being executed by his opponent. Now indebted to Valjean, without knowing his true identity, Javert grudgingly offers his services as a bodyguard, which Valjean accepts. With Valjean’s popular influence, Javert is able to gain the necessary information to learn the truth about Emperor Aurelius’ death and begin to organize the people against his usurper son. When asked to be released from his service to avoid bringing disgrace upon Valjean’s respected name as he continues plotting against Commodus, Valjean reveals his true identity to Javert. The two men, once bitter enemies, forge a new alliance together in the face of Rome’s greatest threat.»
